  1.                    THE GREAT SEAL OF THE UNITED STATES

  3.      How many of you have ever closely examined a dollar bill? On the
  4. back side, there is a picture of both sides of the Great Seal of The 
  5. United States. Read its description below.

  10.      The Great Seal of the United States, adopted in 1782, is the only
  11. government seal in the world having two sides. The face depicts an American
  12. Eagle, representing national sovereignty which is breasted by our national
  13. shield.
  14.  
  15.      The eagle is holding in its right talon an olive branch of 13 leaves and 
  16. thirteen olives symbolizing peace. In the left talon are thirteen arrows
  17. signifying the original colonies' fight for liberty.
  18.  
  19.      A ribbon held in the eagles beak is inscribed " E pluribus Unum." or
  20. "One out of many." in reference to unity of the thirteen colonies as one
  21. government.

  23.      Over the eagles head is a grouping of 13 stars wreathed in in clouds,
  24. again representing the original colonies.
  25.  
  26.      The pyramid on the reverse side of the Great Seal represents permanence
  27. and strength. Its unfinished condition indicates that the United States will
  28. always grow, build and improve with a continuous evaluation of Truth.

  30.      The thirteen layers of stone in the pyramid refer to the thirteen 
  31. original states and the individual rights of the states. The separate stones
  32. represent local self government.

  34.      The words "Annuit Coeptis (thirteen letters) mean "God has favored our
  35. undertakings." or "enterprise." 
  36.  
  37.      At the bottom are the words "Novus Ordo Seclorum." meaning "New Order of
  38. the Ages." 
  39.  
  40.      At the base of the pyramid is the Roman description of "1776" the year
  41. our country was founded.
  42.  
  43.      The "Eye" of Providence" within a glory of light placed above the pyramid
  44. illustrates the spiritual above the material. It also represents education and
  45. freedom of knowledge.
